Maps, music, open road

An eSIM for your road trip

Keep the maps, music and messages going mile after mile. Prepaid data, with no roaming bill waiting at home.

Why it helps

Why an eSIM helps on a road trip

Navigation from the first junction, and data that keeps up with the route.

  • Navigating from the car park

Install your eSIM on Wi-Fi before you travel. Your plan's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network, so it's ready for directions the moment you pick up the car.

  • Keep the passengers online

Share your data with passengers' tablets and laptops using Personal Hotspot (iPhone) or Wi-Fi hotspot (Android). It uses your allowance more quickly, so allow for it when you choose a plan.

  • Taking the long way round?

Add data to the eSIM you already have from your account, with nothing new to install. Top-ups are for the same country or region your eSIM covers.

Data guide

How much data will I need?

Navigation itself is light on data. Streaming in the car and keeping passengers online is what adds up.

  • Navigation, traffic and messages

    Light use

Directions, finding fuel, food and somewhere to stay, and keeping up with messages.

  • Streaming music and podcasts

    Moderate use

Hours of streaming on long drives adds up. Download playlists and podcasts on Wi-Fi before you set off and play them offline.

  • Sharing photos and browsing social apps

    Moderate use

Posting from viewpoints adds up over a trip, and more if videos auto-play as you scroll. Set photo backups to run on Wi-Fi only.

  • Passengers streaming video through your hotspot

    Heavy use

The biggest use. Everything the other devices do comes out of your allowance, so download films and shows for the back seat on Wi-Fi before you leave.

Good to know

Tips for a connected road trip

  • Turn on data roaming for the eSIM

When you arrive, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it: the eSIM needs roaming on to connect. With the eSIM as your data line, your home SIM isn't used for data by mistake.

  • Download offline maps for the route

Signal can be patchy in remote countryside and mountains. Download offline maps for the whole route on Wi-Fi so you can still find your way if the signal drops.

  • Driving in the USA

Many US networks have switched off 3G, so set your phone's Voice & Data setting to LTE or 5G for a reliable connection.

  • Keep a charger in the car

Navigation and hotspot both drain your battery quickly. Keep a car charger or power bank to hand so your maps don't go dark halfway along the route.

Questions

Road trip eSIM questions

Yes, on a regional plan. Our Europe plan covers over 35 countries, and your eSIM finds a local network in each new country with no settings to change. A country plan covers that country only, and top-ups are for the same country or region, so check that every country on your route is listed on the plan's page.
